SEARCHING STRATEGIES

PHRASES are always place inside of quotation marks "  " The search  finds words in the exact order given.   Examples:
       "civil rights"    "New York City"
AND  [Boolean term]
Most search engines put
AND in between words automatically.
The search  finds records that have these words within the document.  
Example: 
      crime
AND children AND
 television 
OR   [Boolean term]
 broadens your search
Synonyms and spelling variations of
a term are retrieved.  
Example:  
              cats 
  OR   felines      
AND NOT 
         
  [Boolean term]
 narrows your search
Why?    The excluded terms will not be in the search results. 
e.g.   "waste storage" AND NOT nuclear 

    + Requires a term 
 
  
- Excludes a term  

Most search engines include or exclude a term if  + or - sign is in front of the word.
             Inclusion:    +cats +allergies 
            
Exclusion:    -dogs

Use ADVANCED Search to utilize special features of an engine.
